My Pink Moisturizing Dream”
About
My practice often reflects on the notion of Nostalgia, and being of Being of Welsh, Caribbean and Irish mixed heritage, aspects of identity and culture feed into my work. I don’t think there are many brown/ Black people who have grown up with out a hair story to tell. I wanted to respond to my familiarity of the popular hair brand products when I was a teenager, and experimenting with my “Wild” hair. Even just looking at the bottles I can smell the product, and remember the feeling of it all over my hands, and then dripping down my forehead. The promise of a non drip product, of tamed and beautiful hair, of no more fuss, of a better way of being. All these feelings gave me hope, and excited me when trying them out. I decided to bring back these promises through colourful prints, and re kindle this feeling of hope through a bottle. The idea was to then use the print to develop it into a large print to stick up around my local town of Margate. I hoped that when those familiar with these products, on seeing these wheat pastes, would invoke a sense of joy and nostalgic feeling, a kind of if you know you know impact
